Male Model

Are you considering becoming a male runway model? Modeling is a popular job, but it is something that comes easily.  Yes, being a model is not just about walking the runway and strutting your stuff.   Being a great and popular model requires not just the right looks, but also dedication and discipline.  This is particularly true when it comes to males.  The fashion industry has a lot of supermodels, mostly females.  It is more difficulty to attain popularity as a male model.  However, you can still enjoy some success as a as a male model.

Here are a few tips to help you:

  • First, of course, is your appearance.  Measure up what you have to offer and whether that is what is needed by prospective clients and booking agencies.  A male model’s height is usually at 5’11 to 6’2”.  This is because one’s height will help highlight the clothes that he is modeling.  You also need to keep yourself fit.  Fashion designers naturally prefer a toned body.  Keep yourself fit, as this will help maintain a “hunky” appearance that is usually gained by being healthy.  But don’t overdo the exercise – big muscles like that of a builder builder’s are not attractive for models.  Now, don’t be too hung up on being that “perfect” man.  There are also a lot of job opportunities for models that have outstanding features.  One can be an eyewear model or a hand model.
  • Second, you have to be where the action’s at.  You can’t become a popular model if you’re at the boondocks!   Transfer to a big city, where models have plenty of opportunities to shine.  New York, the Big Apple, as well as large cities like Chicago and Los Angeles are in need of models for ads, for runways and commercials.
  • Also, prepare a portfolio with photographs that display your best features.  The portfolio must have pictures of you wearing different types of clothes – swimwear, business attire and sports attire.  The portfolio must have full body and head shots.  The portfolio should also contain key information about you, such as your height, vital statistics and clothing size.  When doing your portfolio, decide on what kind of jobs you want to have.  If you don’t feel at ease as an underwear model, then you should make the decision to avoid and say no to those kinds of jobs.  The portfolio you have is your publicity tool that will show potential clients what you can do and how you look.
  • Fourthly, you should get some training if you are not that confident as a male runway model.  A modeling school will help your skills so that you learn the proper way to model clothes, to stand and move as a model should.  You should learn how to have confidence as you model with flair and style.  Enrolling in a modeling school will also help increase your chances of getting bookings, as most booking agencies do their scouting at modeling schools.
  • Lastly, a male model will need a booking agent to help generate appointments and jobs.  Be sure to go with a modeling agency that has built a solid reputation and is trusted by clients.

Remember that although being a male model is a highly lucrative (and glamorous) job, it is not easy to get into this industry.  You need to have the looks, the right attitude and the right strategy in promoting yourself.
